Spanish Conversation Club


Overview

Spanish Conversation Club is designed to help customers who are learning Spanish to practice speaking and listening skills in a comfortable and informal environment. Through the use of small group and paired discussions, volunteers will discuss topics such as travel, food and shopping.

 

Program Goals

Spanish Conversation Club is designed:

  • To provide a comfortable and safe environment to practice speaking and listening in Spanish
  • To foster independent learning skills
  • To provide an enjoyable social setting
  • To increase awareness and use of library resources, services and programs

 

Length of Program

  • 1.5 hours a week for 8 week sessions in Fall/Winter
  • 1.5 hours a week for 7 week sessions in Summer

 

Volunteer Qualifications

  • Fluent in Spanish
  • Strong facilitation skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Respect and understanding of diversity

 

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Help participants to learn and practice Spanish
  • Commit to participate in the program for a minimum of one year
  • Contact library staff if unable to attend a scheduled session
  • Respect confidentiality


Training

  • Volunteer coaches participate in a training workshop covering relevant topics, including an introduction to Calgary Public Library, program goals and organization, characteristics of adult learners, and review of modules.
  • Branch Orientation conducted by the branch contact staff person will be offered prior to the start of the program
