We are at a unique moment in our city’s development with an unprecedented opportunity to create a legacy that will have a profound impact on the lives of Calgarians today and for generations to come. Add In—the Campaign for Calgary’s Library, is a bold, audacious vision to take a great library system and turn it into the best in the world. In what will be the largest fundraising campaign for a library in Canadian history, Add In will redefine the role of a library in our rapidly-changing society. The campaign will be segmented into four categories: Inspiration, Information, Imagination and Innovation. These represent key areas in which the Library plans to invest in order to reach the hearts and minds of the millions of Calgarians who turn to us for knowledge, information, programming and community-building.
The Foundation is building support with its stakeholders and donors to elevate philanthropic and sponsorship investment to new heights. With more than $245 million in support for the New Central Library already secured, the campaign is readying for a public launch. We are seeking to raise an additional $75 million in private support to add to this incredible core public investment.
The Calgary Public Library’s Grow A Reader mobile app takes the fun, interactive content from our popular early literacy programs and delivers it to parents via their smartphone or tablet. The app includes videos of Library staff performing rhymes, fingerplays and songs, recommended booklists and tips for parents.
The Grow A Reader app extends the reach of the Library's early literacy programs by making the content available to anyone with an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Parents who are not able to attend a program in person with their baby can learn skills and tips and those who have attended a program can use the app to practice what they learned at home.
In 2012, the Calgary Public Library re-launched the Sun Life Financial Arts + Culture Pass, a unique made-in-Calgary initiative that opens doors and opportunities for low-income Calgarians to access quality arts and culture experiences. The initiative builds upon a successful pilot project that was made possible through a community grant from the Calgary Foundation. Now, as a result of a generous multi-year financial investment by Sun Life Financial, the Library has expanded the initiative to all 18 community libraries in the system.
Case Study: Opening Doors To Arts And Culture For Calgarians
In January of 2013, with full support by Canadian Oil Sands Limited, the Calgary Public Library launched Math Minds, which provides essential math support and fun numeracy activities for children. Starting at three community libraries and expanding to all 18 within three years, this program has already seen incredibly high demand with waitlists at all locations.
The overall objectives of Math Minds is to strengthen numeracy among students in kindergarten to grade six and to help establish Calgary as a centre of excellence in math education. For students, numeracy is essential for future success in careers such as science and engineering. These disciplines drive innovation and technology development, which are critical to the Canadian economy.
Canadian Oil Sands believes that any student can enjoy and excel at math, including those who have encountered challenges in the past; you don’t need to be born “good at math”. Our shared vision is that the confidence gained through students’ success in math will empower them to make a positive difference for themselves and the world.
