TD Read With Me
Overview
The TD Read With Me program matches adult volunteers with young struggling readers in Grades 1 - 6. Volunteers support children one-on-one to discover the magic of reading and develop a lifelong reading habit. Various literacy based games and fun books are promoted to discover the magic of reading.
Program Goals
TD Read With Me is designed:
- To enhance reading level skills and interest in reading for young readers
- To instill confidence and genuine desire for lifelong learning
- To provide exposure to a fun creative learning environment
- To foster independent learning skills
- To introduce family/caregivers to the Library
- To increase awareness and use of library resources, services and programs
Length of the program
- 1.0 hour a week, throughout the year
Volunteer Qualifications
- Fluent in English
- Strong facilitation skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Patient and reliable
- Ability to help children of diverse backgrounds and skill levels
- Attend a five hour training session
Volunteer Responsibilities
- Help participants to enhance their reading skills
- Commit to participate in the program for a minimum of one year
- Contact the participant if you unable to attend a scheduled session
- Respect confidentiality
Training
- A 5.5 hour training session covering program content, volunteer responsibilities, and the role of volunteers at Calgary Public Library
