ESL Conversation Club (Adult Opportunity, 18 and over)
Overview
ESL Conversation Club is designed for new Canadians with intermediate conversation skills to practice their English by speaking and listening in small groups. Volunteers will guide participants through interesting conversational topics such as travel, food, shopping and career searching skills.
Program Goals
The ESL Conversation Club is designed:
- To provide a comfortable and safe environment to practice speaking and listening in English.
- To foster independent learning skills
- To provide an enjoyable social setting
- To increase awareness and use of library resources, services and resources
Length of Program
- 2 hours a week for 8 week sessions in Fall, Winter, and Spring
Volunteer Qualifications
- Fluent in English
- Strong facilitation skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to accommodate a diversity of backgrounds and skill levels
Volunteer Responsibilities
- Help participants to learn and practice English
- Contact library staff if you are unable to attend a scheduled session
- Respect confidentiality
Training
- Volunteer coaches participate in a training workshop covering relevant topics, including an introduction to Calgary Public Library, program goals and organization, characteristics of intermediate ESL adult learners, and review of modules
- Branch Orientation conducted by the branch contact staff person will be offered prior to the start of the program
