'Grow A Reader' Wins Award

by Shannon C - 0 Comment(s)

Grow A Reader on an iPad and iPhoneThe Calgary Public Library was recently named a 2013 Top Innovator (Customer Experience) by the Urban Libraries Council for our Grow A Reader early literacy app.

The app takes the fun, interactive songs, rhymes and finger plays from our popular early literacy programs and makes them available in video format to mobile users. In the first two months the app was downloaded 1,200 times.

Grow A Reader provides parents and caregivers another tool to foster kids' language skills and get them ready for reading. It also includes lists of recommended books and tips for developing the five key early literacy skill sets.

“This initiative is a great example of how the Calgary Public Library strives to innovate and adapt to expand opportunities for people of all ages,” says Cathy Freer-Leszcynski, Director of Customer Services for the Calgary Public Library. “This prestigious award recognizes this, and our continued commitment to our customers.”

The awards were announced during the ULC Annual Forum in Chicago. The winning libraries were chosen by a panel of expert judges who considered more than 140 applications.

“These innovations continue to represent the leadership and value of high-performing public libraries,” said ULC President and CEO Susan Benton. “From helping parents access information about early childhood literacy skills through a mobile App to creating a library presence at an international airport to helping their community after a natural disaster, public libraries are continuing to broaden and deepen their roles as vital community resources.”

Grow A Reader was produced with videography by Crescendo Productions and app devleopment by local start-up Decoder. Thank you both!
