The Black Water Dragon

by Katherine - 2 Comment(s)

This post is dedicated to all the South Koreans I know and love. You know who you are, and for everything you’ve given me, I owe you my most sincere gam sa hab ni da.

Happy (lunar) New Year! Today, we enter into the year of the dragon, but not just any old run-of-the-mill dragon. This is the year of the Black Water Dragon – an especially auspicious period that comes around only once every sixty years. According to an article in the Bangkok Post, this year indicates a change, “…but with a measure of calm, sensibility and prudence.”

Interestingly enough, birth rates are expected to rise in Asia this year, because parents will desire children born in this special time. Note to self: buy stock in Korean or Chinese diaper companies.

So, what will you do in this luckier-than-average time? For inspiration regarding travel, self-help, mid-life career change, parenting and lots more, visit your local library branch. Check out our materials on astrology and dragons, too!

Celebrate the Year of the Tiger

Millions of people in Asia and throughout the world are preparing to celebrate the New Year. According to the Chinese zodiac, which is based on the lunar calendar, we are about to enter the year of the Tiger. The year will begin on February 14th, 2010, and will end on February 2nd, 2011. Traditionally, the Tiger is a symbol of bravery, but it is also associated with impulsiveness.

Why not learn more about the Chinese zodiac by browsing our catalogue? Learn what you can expect financially, and romantically. Find out which traits your children may have, if they’re born in this year.

As well, be sure to celebrate with us! Chinese calligraphy, fan dancing, and a martial arts demonstration are just some of the programs we’ve got planned!

Calling All Centaurs!

If your birthday falls between November 23rd and December 21st, you are a Sagittarius. You are a fire sign, and your ruling planet is Jupiter. Being born in the ninth house of the zodiac predisposes you to interests in travel and philosophy. Does this sound like you?

The zodiac has a long, interesting and somewhat obscure history. The twelve signs that were developed in the Western world were remarkably similar to those developed in ancient India. The Chinese, who have a different sign from year to year, rather than month to month, still employed the number twelve in their scheme.

I regard the zodiac as equal parts astronomy, psychology and art. Enjoy it for the guidance it offers, its beautiful imagery and intriguing symbols, or just appreciate how the ancients could have discovered the constellations and mapped their movements, all without telescopes or even Bic pens!

"Typical Pisces!"

by Katherine - 0 Comment(s)

Recently, I had the chance to meet with an old friend. We were both mired in tumultuous strings of events, and so it was great to re-connect with someone who could really, truly understand me.

In trying to identify “where it all went wrong”, my friend was reflecting on his own tendency to be evasive, and sighed: “…typical Pisces”.

It’s endlessly fascinating to me that a tradition as ancient and esoteric as the Western zodiac still holds explanatory power for 21st century minds. I don’t often admit to my lifelong fascination with the zodiac, but among other “believers”, I can let loose and be the outspoken Sagittarian that I truly am. For some reason – superstitious or otherwise – it just feels right.

If you’re someone with whom the zodiac resonates, search our catalogue for “astrology”.

Also, do you read your daily horoscope? Why not “green” this habit, by reading it online? Starting from our homepage, click on e-library, and then Newspaper Direct Press Display. Look for the Calgary Herald under “Librarian’s Picks”.

The friend I mentioned is a Pisces in the extreme; he's sensitive, intuitive, and amazingly artistic. He and I share a wonderful connection, an enduring friendship and a ruling planet. Coincidence? I think not.
