Good Bets for Your Two Hours

I like clever movies and Side Effects is certainly that. A well-constructed plot unfolding at a good pace, and solid performances by Rooney Mara, Jude Law and Catherine Zeta Jones make this a good bet for your two hours.

Grabbed a couple of older titles off the shelf and hit the jackpot on both of them:

From 2004, Something the Lord Made stars one of my perennial faves, Alan Rickman, and hip-hop artist turned actor Mos Def. Don't let this put you off; Def can act and the two of them are really good in this. A dramatization of the relationship between surgery pioneers Alfred Blalock and Vivien Thomas, the first to defy the unwritten rule against operating on the heart and as a result invent by-pass surgery.

Next up is Some Mother's Son from 1996 with Helen Mirren. Based on the true story of the 1981 hunger strike in a British prison, in which IRA prisoner Bobby Sands led a protest against the treatment of IRA prisoners as criminals rather than as prisoners of war. The film focuses on the mothers of two of the strikers, and their struggle to save the lives of their sons.
