teensFrustrated with how the semester ended? Ok, so in September you were really ambitious to start the school year off with a bang and keep it up for the entire school year. Yet things haven't worked out as you had planned, right? Does everything your teacher tell you sound foreign to you? No worries, Central library has the solution for you!! From Monday, February 4 to Monday, April 29 (with the exception of February 18), we have a gathering place on the second floor for teens to meet with teen volunteers to get help with their homework, from 4:30 to 6:30. You are more than welcome to stick around until 8 pm to finish anything that you have already started. Check out these previous blogs, OMG, it's due tomorrow and Kick Next Semesters @$$ for some great homework help databases. Don't forget to check out all the other awesome programs that we have for you to check out.

Peer to Peer Study Group = Homework Help at The Library!

by Adrienne - 0 Comment(s)

Okay, so it's mid semester and you're overloaded with homework. Right, ... right? Yeah, I thought so. Plus this is putting a serious cramp on your social life right? Well we, at Central, have the perfect solution for you. On Mondays (including this Monday the 26th!) from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. we have created a special study space for teens to work in on the third floor. Teen volunteers (Honours' and IB students) will be on hand to help you with your homework! Plus you can stick around until 8pm to finish what you started. Awesome right? Upcoming dates are Nov 26, Dec 03, and Dec 10. Teens in Grades 10 to 12 can come get help with your homework from other students. Plus check out some of our previous blogs for awesome homework help databases and other cool after-school programs offered at the library. Need a tutor? Due tomorrow? = No Problem! Did I mention the social possibilities of homework?? Always a way to meet new people...

As a teen I was part of the Peer-Support team at my high school. It was great! Mind you it wasn't a study group, but I definitely made some lasting friendships through it, plus learning a thing or two about psychology. My point being, that Peer to Peer homework support is a great place to do your homework in silence, and get out of the house, increasing your social network at the same time. Killing the birds of homework, better grades, happy teachers and socializing in one fell swoop. How could your parents possibly argue with that? Come on down!

OMG It's due tomorrow!?!?!

Kick Next Semester's @$$

by Jilliane Yawney - 1 Comment(s)

Okay. So you kind of blew it this semester. You started out with the best intentions -- this was going to be the year that you got straight A’s, this year you would try out for the team and make it, this year you would get some volunteer hours under your belt… but hey, life happens. Maybe you became a total gLeek and couldn’t peel your eyes off the tube. Maybe ‘Black Ops’ snuck into your life faster than it did over enemy lines. Maybe you are the school champion at Tap Tap Revenge and had to maintain your title at any cost. Whatever the reason, you found your drive to do better this year sink faster than Justin Bieber’s vocal range.

But it’s okay. DON’T PANIC. The Calgary Public Library is here with a ton of excellent resources that will get you motivated and help you out in the second half of this school year.

Homework Help

We’ve got loads of books packed with Study Tips and Steps to Success. Check out titles like:

Study Smarter, Not Harder

Study Skills: Do I really need this stuff?

Hacker Knowledge: 77 Ways to Learn Faster, Deeper and Better

(this one is from the E-Library)

Or type “Study Skills” into the Online Catalogue Search and see what comes up! Rather not add another book to your already huge workload? We also have DVDs like:

Studying and Test-Taking

Researching, Reading and Writing and

Active Listening and Note-Taking

Only one subject got you down? Try doing a search in the Online Catalogue for the course you’re struggling with:

Math Doesn't Suck: How to Survive Middle School Math without Losing your Mind or Breaking a NailNo Fear Shakespeare: A Companion

Don’t forget, the Library carries the most recent copies of “The Key” in all Provincial and Diploma subjects, FREE with your library card! Put a hold on yours now, they rarely make it back onto the shelves.

If you haven’t checked out the E-Library yet, that explains A LOT about why you’ve fallen behind in your homework! It’s easy to use and gets you results fast – the kind of results that are guaranteed to have true, recent and useful information, unlike some sources I could name (yeah, I’m looking at you Wiki…)

And as always, there is a helpful librarian waiting on the other side of “Info Chat” to help you with your homework questions any time the library is open. Click on that uber-happy smiley face on the main page, or the grey “Homework Helper Online” button higher up this page and a little to your left.

Don’t forget to keep checking back at the TeenZone Blog for more tips and tricks to get you through the year, as well as info about interesting news and sweet events going on around Calgary!

It's easy and it's quick, but can you trust the information you find there? These resources are available 24 hours a day, and unlike the E-Library, you do not need a library card to access them.
