This database consists of pictorial collections of photographs and historical postcards of significant Calgary and Alberta buildings, including Calgary's Century Homes collection, and events and people important to Calgary's heritage.
The Community Heritage and Family History Digital Collections consists of the following collections:
Alison Jackson Photography Collection
In 1988, the estate of former Calgary Public Library librarian Alison Jackson donated an extensive collection of slides and photographs primarily of Calgary's historic buildings and residences to the library's Local History Collection. These pictures, most of which were taken between 1953 and 1977 have now been digitized and made available online. Selected pictures from the former "Virtual Tour of Historic Calgary" also include in-depth architectural and historical building articles originally taken from the Calgary Herald's "Cornerstones" columns. Some biographical articles related to historically significant residences from "Calgary's Heritage Homes" have also been included here.
Judith Umbach Photography Collection
Over 800 photographs were donated to the Local History Collection of the Calgary Public Library in 2005 by Judith Umbach, who gained her appreciation of contemporary history while serving on the Board of Trustees for Calgary Public Library. Most of the pictures document the construction or renovation of well-known facilities in the downtown core and Crescent Heights areas and document Calgary's construction, architecture and development.
Postcards from the Past
Calgary Public Library's extensive collection of almost 2000 historical postcards of Alberta and Calgary has been digitized and made accessible through this searchable database which documents more than 100 years of Alberta history.
