How do I get a Library card?

All Calgary residents can get a free Calgary Public Library card! Visit any Calgary Public Library branch to get a new card.

New cardholders under 18 years of age will have limited access on their cards (filtered internet access, maximum borrowing limit of 10 items) until a parent or guardian approves full access.

Your Library card is for your use only. Every individual wanting to borrow materials or use other Library services must have their own card.

How many items can I borrow at once?

You can borrow up to 99 items, including:

  • 30 DVDs and Blu-rays
  • 10 'New & Notable' books and CDs
  • 10 'New & Notable' DVDs and Blu-rays

How do I access my account online?

Visit the My Account link on our website and enter your library card number (the complete number without spaces between the numbers).

What is my PIN?

Your PIN is set as the last four digits of your phone number when you sign up for your card. You can change your PIN when you log into My Account.

Why does my account say "User Barred"?

If you do not close out of your account when using self-checkout by answering the question on the screen ("Do you want a receipt?"), or if you leave your card in the self-checkout machine, your status will be changed to “User Barred.”  This prevents another customer from using your account. Call us at 403-260-2600 to reinstate your account.

What are the late fees for overdue items or missed holds?

The date your items are due is found on your checkout receipt or online in My Account. If you miss your due date, you will be charged the following late fees per day until they are returned:

  • Adult materials: $0.35
  • DVDs: $0.50
  • Young Adult materials: $0.20
  • Children's materials: $0.15
  • Items from other library systems: $1.00
  • Holds not picked up: $2.00

Payments in-person can be made by cash, Visa and Mastercard. Payments through My Account using PayPal can be made by Visa, Mastercard , Discover and American Express.

Why does my account say my book is overdue when I have already returned it to the library?

Due to the volume of our return materials it can take up to 2 days for items to be removed from your account.  The check in date will reflect the date of return and overdue fines will automatically be removed.

Why didn't I receive notification for my overdue items?

Our system attempts to notify you regarding overdue items when the items are approximately 14 days overdue.

Why can't I renew my items?

Items cannot be renewed when someone has requested the item or when you have reached your maximum renewals.

Why have I been charged a $2 hold lapsed fee? I didn't get notification of the hold.

We attempt to contact you via phone three times after the arrival of a hold or once by email.  The $2 hold lapsed fee is placed on the account if a hold is not picked up within 7 days of your first notification. When your phone number or email changes be sure to let us know, so your records are kept up-to-date.
