LEADERSHIP IN ENERGY AND
ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN
The Calgary Public Library's innovative Crowfoot Branch
is the first building to be designed and constructed under the City of
Calgary's new Sustainable Policy.
Designed by COHOS EVAMY, the branch is the first operational building in
Calgary to meet the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED) standards.

Sustainable design considerations reflected in this new library include:
- Minimal disturbance of the site around the building footprint, parking lot,
and roadways.
- Extensive recycling and material salvage to reduce construction waste.
- Minimal disturbance of the site around the building footprint, parking lot,
and roadways.
- Energy Star compliant roof material salvage and louvered windows to cut heat
absorption and reduce cooling requirements in the summer months.
- R-20 wall insulation, R-35 roof insulation, and high performance glazing.
- Maximized use of natural daylight to cut down the electricity requirements
for illuminating the branch.
- Very low volatile organic compound (VOC) content paints, carpets, and
adhesives used throughout the building.
- Low-flow plumbing fixtures to substantially reduce the use of water and
demand on water treatment plants.
- On-demand water heating saves energy over standard tank heaters.
- Hardy planting materials that will be watered with a high-efficiency drip
irrigation system, saving tens-of-thousands of litres of water each year.
