Making one large donation is not always possible. With our convenient monthly giving program, you have the benefit of small monthly donations. Over a year, those donations add up, reflecting your strong support of the Calgary Public Library. Monthly donations are a cost-effective way to give, and they provide the Foundation with stable, year-round funding.

You may change your donation amount or cancel at any time. Your official income tax receipt for the full amount of your gift will be sent to you each December.

To make your monthly gift on your credit card, or through your chequing account, simply print out the form below, fill it out, and send it in today.

5. Donating books
The Calgary Public Library Foundation gratefully accepts donations of books. Library books sometimes do not have an easy life, so donated books must be in excellent condition to stand up to the handling they receive. You can drop off your donated books at any Calgary Public Library branch.

The Calgary Public Library Foundation will work with donors who would like to provide certain titles for the Library’s shelves. While not all requests can be accommodated, we will work to ensure the satisfaction of the donor.

If you have a large number of books you would like to donate, please call ahead to your local Library branch to see if they can handle the donation on any particular day.

For donations of a few books, they can be dropped off at any branch of the Calgary Public Library, and even placed in the book chutes if the branch is closed. Just be sure to attach a piece of paper to the item indicating that it is a donation. If you don’t attach a slip of paper indicating that an item is a donation, it may be sent to the Library’s lost and found.

Once donated books are given to the Calgary Public Library, it is up to the discretion of the Library as to which items will be put into circulation. The Library will take into account the demand for the item, the number of copies already in the collection, and the age or relevance of the book. If an item is not suitable for the Library’s collection, it may be added to a sale table. The Library sells books at a generously discounted price, since the Library does not have storage space to house all donated books.  All proceeds from the sale table support the purchase of new books and materials for the Library's collections.

If a donor does not want their donated items to be put on the sale table, they can provide the Library with a complete list of the title, author, publication date, and condition of each item. The Library will review the list, and let the donor know which items can be added to the Library collection.

The Calgary Public Library Foundation accepts monetary donations to purchase specific titles, provided those titles are needed for the Library’s collections (see the first paragraph in this section).

Donating Valuable Books to the Calgary Public Library Foundation

Tax receipts are only issued for books of high value.

The Calgary Public Library has been the grateful recipient of a number of rare and valuable books, generously donated by Calgarians.

Tax receipts can be issued for the donation of books of significant value. Such donations can not be made at Calgary Public Library branches. They must be made through the Calgary Public Library Foundation.

In order for the Calgary Public Library Foundation to issue a tax receipt, please remember that:

The Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (Revenue Canada) requires that the item be appraised, in writing, by an independent, recognized expert.
The donor is responsible for arranging the appraisal of the item, and for any fees involved in that appraisal. If the item is accepted by the Calgary Public Library Foundation, those fees may be included as part of the donation value.

To arrange for your donation of a valuable book or item, please call us at (403) 260-2631.

Opportunities for Individual Giving

The Collection Fund

It’s vital that the Calgary Public Library stay current with today’s fast-paced and ever-changing world of information. But over the past few years, the cost of books and materials has risen by over 65 percent, while the Library’s budget has risen by only about 6 percent. That’s why funding for library collections is so important.

Your generous donation will help buy much needed new books and materials for adults, children, and special needs customers.

You may choose to direct your donation to:

where it’s needed most;
purchase new books and materials;
purchase new videos and CDs;
 purchase Special Needs materials, such as large print or talking books;
purchase children’s books and materials; and
sponsor a specialized collection, such as a selection of parenting or career books.

The Building Fund

By supporting the Building Fund, your donation will help bring a Library to those communities not yet served by a branch. Presently, the Calgary Public Library Foundation is seeking funding from both individuals and the corporate community to bring the new Crowfoot Library  to life in Calgary’s Northwest.

The Foundation continues to fundraise for the much-needed new library in Calgary's  North Central communities. Currently the Nose Hill and Thorn-hill branches are operating well beyond capacity.

Be part of our success by donating today!
