THE CALGARY LIBRARY FOUNDATION

The Calgary Public Library Foundation is a registered charity, separate from the Calgary Public Library itself. The funds raised by the Foundation through the generosity of our donors do not replace the Library’s core funding, but rather enhance the special programs and services that the Library can provide.

Our donors are very special people who strongly believe in the role that an outstanding public library can play in a community’s quality of life. The gifts of literacy and life-long learning touch everyone – regardless of age, gender, or income.
"For years, the Library has played an important role in my life – it’s about time you started a Foundation so that I can give something back!" - 70-year-old supporter
Mission

The Calgary Public Library Foundation raises funds to help the Calgary Public Library provide outstanding library services to the community.

Vision

A strong public library plays an essential role in the quality of life that Calgarians experience. The Calgary Public Library Foundation, through the generosity of its donors, helps  Calgary’s public library system to meet the community’s educational, recreational, and life-long learning needs. Thanks to ongoing support from individuals and business in our community, all Calgarians will continue to have access to a world of information and ideas through the Calgary Public Library.

Current Focus

The Calgary Public Library Foundation looks to:

Support the purchase of new books and other materials for the Library’s collections.
Support Library services, particularly in the areas of childhood literacy, adult literacy, special needs, access to new information technology, and children’s programs.
Support the building of new branches to ensure that all Calgarians have convenient access to Library services.

Successes

In 2000 -- the first year of the Foundation’s operation -- the Calgary Public Library Foundation was successful in raising over $100,000 from generous Calgarians through individual donations. The money raised was given to the Calgary Public Library in January of 2001 to purchase new books and materials for the Library’s collections, which have been greatly impacted by inflation, a declining Canadian dollar, and increased demand.

With special support from various community funding organizations, the Foundation was also instrumental in securing sponsorships for the enhancement of the Library’s Baby Story Time program, and for the development of special computers for visually and mobility impaired Calgarians.
