Census Records

  • Canadian census returns (microfilm) 1666 – 1901
  • 1906 Census of the Northwest Provinces is available on microfilm.
  • Finding aid Catalogue of Census Returns on Microfilm, 1666 – 1891

  • Finding aid listing Newfoundland census reels
  • Scanned images of the 1901, 1906 and 1911 Canada Census are available through the Library and Archives Canada web site 
  • Indexes for select portions of the census. Check the library 
    catalogue; a keyword in subject search using census and indexes will 
    give a complete list.
  • Online index for the 1881 Canada census can be found on the LDS 
    homepage
    .
  • Provincial census indexes, including Alberta, are also available.

  • Except for Newfoundland, no census returns are available after 1911.
  • The Newfoundland census for 1921, 1935 and 1945 can be borrowed 
    through the Interlibrary Loans Service.
  • In 1940 all persons over the age of 16 were required to register with 
    the government. Searches of The National Registration file can be 
    requested (covered by the Privacy Act, fees apply).

  • Current city directories and phone books are found on the 3rd floor, 
    Central, W. R. Castell Library
Immigration & Passenger Records
  • Passenger manifests for ships entering the official ports of Canada (microfilm) 1865 – 1924 (Form 30A 1919 - 1924)
  • Lists of arrivals at the Port of New York and eastern ports of the United States; only names of passengers who were going directly on to Canada are included in these microfilms 1905 -1918
  • Finding aid , indexed by date and port of entry, lists microfilm reel numbers; also listed on Canadian Genealogy Centre
  • Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s. CD-Rom (2000) and multi-volume set 
  • Check the key word in subject catalogue ships and passenger lists for books in the collection
  • Microfilms of passenger lists from 1925 to 1935 may be borrowed on Interlibrary loans from the National Archives of Canada. A name index for 1925-1935 is available through Canadian Genealogy Centre.
Border Entry Records 
  • Lists of entry into Canada from the US (microfilm) 1908 – 1918
  • Finding aid, listing microfilm reel numbers, is kept in the Department
  • Canadian Border Entry Lists, 1908-1918: Yukon Territory & British Columbia. 1997
  • From 1919 to 1924, people crossing the border into Canada were required to fill in a Form 30. These forms have been microfilmed and can be borrowed on inter-library loan from the National Archives. A finding aid is available
  • Microfilm reels covering the years 1925 to 1935 may be borrowed from the National Archives; a finding aid is available
Home Children
  • The names of the children who were sent to Canada as part of the child emigration movement can be found on the passenger list reels (microfilm), 1869 - 1918
  • Board of Guardians Register and a Soundex Index to names are available on microfilm reels (T537 and T534-T536 respectively); however, first check the National Archives Home Children Online Database 
  • The microfilm reels after 1918 can be borrowed from the National Archives.
Maps, Atlases and Place Names
  • Canada Post Offices, 1755-1895. 1972. The National Archives has an online index of post offices
  • Gazetteer of Canada (for each province)
  • Place Name Dictionaries (check the key word in subject catalogue for names geographic)
  • Illustrated Historical Atlases of Ontario Counties (check the catalogue for a list). The Ontario counties have been digitized and are searchable. 
  • Illustrated Historical Atlas of Prince Edward Island, 1880. 1989. Online index.
  • Illustrated Atlas of the Eastern Townships and South Western Quebec, 1881. 1972
