THE ALBERTA LIBRARY CARD

The Alberta Library Card (TAL Card) provides limited borrowing privileges at Calgary Public Library. In addition to the policies that govern the use of the TAL Card, all of the lending policies of the Calgary Public Library apply. Policies for the use of the TAL Card at the Calgary Public Library are set by the Alberta Library and the Calgary Public Library Board. Apply for a TAL Card at Your Home Library:

  • Anyone with a current membership at a library that is participating in the Alberta Library Card Program can apply for a TAL Card at his or her home library.
  • There is no charge to apply for, or to use, a TAL Card.
Register Your TAL Card at Calgary Public Library:

  • You may register your TAL Card at any branch of the Calgary Public Library.
  • Present your TAL Card, along with identification with your name and address. Staff will enter your name in the computer and apply a Calgary Public Library barcode to your TAL Card.
  • Anyone who is under 18 years of age needs parent/guardian permission (either written or in person) to register a TAL Card at the Calgary Public Library.
Borrow Books at Calgary Public Library:
  • Each time you borrow, you must present your TAL Card and one piece of identification.
  • You may borrow up to 5 books (including paperbacks) at a time.
  • Please make sure that a TAL due date bookmark is put into each book that you borrow. This bookmark must be in the book when it is returned.
  • The loan period is 21 days.
  • TAL Cardholders are not allowed to borrow CDs, cassettes, videos, DVDs, CD-ROM's, read alongs, magazines, book tapes, “New and Notable” items, or items from special collections such as the Arts and Recreation Special Collection.
  • Renewals are not allowed.
  • Holds are not allowed.
  • Interlibrary Loans are not allowed.
Return Books to Calgary Public Library:
  • Books may be returned at the circulation desk or in the book return chute of any branch of the Calgary Public Library.
  • Books borrowed with the TAL card may be returned to any library participating in the Alberta Library Card Program.
  • Each book must be returned with the TAL due date bookmark.
Overdue Reminders:
  • Automated phone notification will be provided to TAL Cardholders who have a home telephone number that is not long distance from Calgary.
  • A mailed notice will be sent to all TAL Cardholders at their home address about 25 days after the overdue book’s due date.
Fines:

Fines accumulate for books returned after the due date:
  • adult book - $ .30/day
  • young adult book - $ .20/day
  • children’s’ book - $ .10/day
TAL Cardholders will be prevented from borrowing when they owe $10.00 or more. Fine payments must be made to the Calgary Public Library. The following payment options are available:
  • in person at the circulation desk at all locations
  • by mail to the Customer Accounts Department, W.R. Castell Central Library, 616 Macleod Tr. SE, CALGARY AB T2G 2M2. Please specify TAL Cardholders name, home phone number and Calgary Public Library barcode number on the cheque.
  • by phoning (403) 260-2684 to authorize payment by Visa or MasterCard.
Lost or Damaged Items:

The charge for a lost or damaged book includes:
  • the replacement cost (based on price in online catalogue)
  • processing fee ($5 for catalogued books and $1 for paperbacks)
  • overdue fine (calculated from due date to payment date).

  • View your Calgary Public Library borrowing record by visiting the library catalogue on the Calgary Public Library website.
  • TAL Cardholders can access email and Calgary Public Library website information, however, access to electronic subscription databases on the CPL website is not permitted.

  • To gain full borrowing privileges with access to all circulating materials at the Calgary Public Library and access to all resources on the CPL website, consider investing in a non-resident membership.

    The cost is $112 per year for a family.
