Updates from Donna Bedry, Fish Creek Library Manager:

April 16 - Watch a short video of our renovation in review! Click here: http://youtu.be/mHyjDERnVCQ

April 4 - All of a sudden, we're (almost) done! The final hoarding wall came down last week and all the light came back into the Library. Now that the main floor is entirely open, customers will see that the sightline from the front entrance is much improved. You can now see from the entrance to the collection and to the elevator. And the parking lot is once again just a parking lot, not a construction site. The only major items we're waiting for now are the 5 checkout stations -- 4 will be next to the stairs on the first floor and 1 will be on the second. Those should be installed next week some time. There are still a few other minor finishing details to complete and some furnishings to install, so we'll be adjusting for the next little while.

The Fish Creek staff and I want to thank all of our customers who continued to support us over the past 12 months. It's been quite an experience.

SAVE THE DATE: Our Post Renovation Celebration will be held on May 24, 2014. There will be activities throughout the day (11:00-3:00) with the official ceremony at 1:00 p.m. I'll make one last 'renovation' post with the details of the day's activities as soon as they're available. Stay tuned!

March 27 - We are just days away from substantial completion! The final hoarding wall should come down within the next few days. Of course, the biggest part of the Fish Creek construction project was the roof replacement and you've been able to see the results of that work for quite some time. Once that last interior hoarding wall comes down, you will finally be able to see one of the other major goals we had for this renovation -- and that is for customers to be able to see straight through to the collection, elevator, and other amenities from the minute they come through the front entrance. In the old layout, it was a long walk to get all the way around the first floor to find the materials, elevator, et cetera. This change will make it much easier and more intuitive to navigate this enormous building. In case you haven't had a chance to come in recently, please note ALL adult materials are on the first floor and ALL materials for children, youth and teens are on the second floor.

I hope you are enjoying the other improvements we've made -- co-located, updated restrooms on the first and second floors equipped with baby changing stations, enhanced lighting throughout the building, laptop café with accessible power outlets for customers using their own devices to access our WiFi, a bright new program room on the first floor -- to name just a very few highlights. It will be a few more weeks until we get all the final minor details taken care of and some new furnishings in place, but we will soon be back to business-as-usual. In fact, this Saturday, March 29, we will resume holding our annual Antiques Appraisal Event with Brian Lehman and his fellow appraisers. It will be our first big event in our renovated space.

Please do contact me if you have any comments or concerns during this final phase of the renovation. As always, thank you for your continued patience as we complete the renovation to bring you a better branch!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are you doing renovations to Fish Creek Library?

Fish Creek Library was built in the early 1980s and opened to the public in 1985. While we upgrade the roof, we'll be working to create a more environmentally sustainable and energy efficient, open, and brighter library with more accessible, intuitive spaces to serve our customers.

How did you pick the contractor for the renovations?

As with all of our construction projects, the Calgary Public Library tendered this renovation project through a Request for Proposal in accordance with the Calgary Public Library’s purchasing policies. Based upon the requirements and the evaluation of the companies submitting proposals to do the renovations, PCL was chosen to do the project.

Will the Library be open during the renovations?

Yes, we anticipate the Library and the outside book chutes will remain open during renovations.

Will Fish Creek Library close any other time during the renovation?

If the library is going to close at any time once renovations begin, we will have signs at Fish Creek Library, and we will update this page.

What hours will Fish Creek Library be open during the renovations?

Fish Creek Library’s hours will remain unchanged:

Monday to Thursday: 10 am – 9 pm
Friday and Saturday: 10 am – 5 pm
Sunday*: Noon – 5 pm

*Closed Sundays during the summer. The last open Sunday in spring is May 11 and the first open Sunday in fall is September 7, 2014.

How long do you expect the renovations to last?

We expect the renovations to last at least through January 2014. As with all construction, there can be unexpected delays due to conditions beyond our control.

Is construction for the renovations going to occur when the branch is open?

Yes, renovations will occur when the branch is open. The areas where the construction is occurring will be cordoned off to ensure the safety of our customers and our staff. We will be continually evaluating the safety of the Library during the renovations to ensure that it remains a safe environment. If at any time, we deemed it not safe, we would make the necessary adjustments to ensure the safety of all, or we would close the Library.

Will the sound from the construction be a problem for people using the Library?

Naturally some noise is anticipated during renovation and construction projects. Everyone will have to determine individually whether the level of noise poses an issue.

How can I stay informed and updated about the renovations at Fish Creek Library?

Check back here for updates to our renovation project. We will also post signs both inside and outside the library.

If I have any questions or concerns during the renovations – who should I talk to at the library?

If you have any concerns at any time during the renovations, you should talk to Branch Manager, Donna Bedry, and, if she is not available, then you will be directed to one of our librarians or senior staff members.

Will there still be parking available in the lot when the construction is going on?

Yes, PCL is only cordoning off a portion of the parking lot for their trailers and supplies. The parking lot will remain available for customers to use.

Will I still be able to borrow library materials and return them to this branch during the renovations?

Yes. We are open during the renovations to provide services and programs to our valued customers. Some library materials will remain in areas inaccessible to the public, however library staff will be able to retrieve those materials for you. Exterior book returns will remain open at all times, even during the closure on April 3, 4, and 5. Our E-Library also offers an extensive digital collection.

Will there still be programs offered at Fish Creek during the renovation period?

Yes. We will still provide many of our usual programs, but with a reduction in adult programs and possible off-site locations for some programs.

How will I know which programs are being offered during the renovation period and where?

Program information is available by asking staff, reading in-branch notices, program guides, our website or by calling 403-260-2600.

Do the other library branch locations offer the same programs?
