Languages and Library Computers
What can you do?
You can use Citrix public computers at Calgary Public Library to
look at web sites in over 50 languages do email from web-based e-mail accounts in over
50 languages prepare letters and resumes using MS Word in over 50 languages.
Where are the computers?
All library locations have public computers.
If you want to work in Chinese, Japanese or Korean ask staff to show you which ones are
Citrix computers.
What do I do?
By pressing the F9 key you can choose the keyboard layout for the language you prefer. Pressing the
F11 key will display a visual onscreen keyboard for the language you have chosen by pressing F9.
Some languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean do not have onscreen
visual keyboards.
Is this the same as the software in my homeland?
No, this is not the same as using, for example, Chinese Microsoft Office and Chinese Windows
operating system. It is North American software which has language features. You may
find that some features you are used to in computer software in your country of origin are not
available.

Is this a translation service?
No, this is a way to be able to use a computer to read and work in a variety of languages.
Are all fonts for languages available?
No, for each language a very commonly used font is included. If you need to see an MS Word
document which has been prepared with an unusual font, try switching to Arial Unicode font to view
it.
Are all keyboard layouts for a language available?
No, there is a selection of keyboard layouts and not all computer keyboard layouts
for a specific language.
What is an onscreen or visual keyboard?
It is the small box which appears on a computer screen after you press F11.
Visual onscreen keyboards can help you if you are new to using an English
keyboard to work in different languages. You can mouseclick on the keys shown in the onscreen keyboard to
make the characters from your language appear on the computer screen. To see more language
characters, mouseclick on the Shift key, the AltGr key and the AltGR + Shift key together. This service does
not have visual keyboards for Chinese, Japanese or Korean.
Will the Library staff teach me how to
write using my homeland language on a computer and get all the words and accents right?
I've never used a computer before.
We are sorry but the Library cannot offer the service of assisting customers in keyboarding and
composition in different languages.
