A message from Mayor Nenshi

Calgary Mayor Portrait pictureNaheed K. Nenshi, Mayor

On behalf of my City Council colleagues and the citizens of Calgary, I am pleased to be part of the 2013 edition of One Book, One Calgary.

One Book, One Calgary is an annual, city-wide initiative designed to start a conversation among Calgarians about the themes of a particular book. It is an opportunity to come together as a community and discuss how these themes relate to our own lives. This year, the committee has chosen a tale fitting for a city learning how to recover from a devastating event.

The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill is a story of hope, of family, and of what it means to be truly resilient. Despite her many hardships, the heroine, Aminata, never gives up. This story is a powerful reminder that no matter how difficult life may be, you must never lose faith in the things that matter most to you.

The conversation about this book will be both challenging and enlightening. I’m really looking forward to it and I hope you are too.
